17 THREATS TO A SPIRITUALLY THRIVING LIFE

Hello Friends,

I found some great insight from Daron Roberts, Pastor of Cornerstone Bible Church in Houston, that I wanted to pass along:

17 Threats to a Spiritually Thriving Life

  1. Focusing more on externals than maturing in Christ (Matthew 15:1-20; 23: Colossians 2:20-23; 3:1-4).
  2. Nurturing bitterness over unmet desires (Hebrews 12:15: James 3:13 – 4:10).
  3. Choosing friends that don’t fear God (Proverbs 1:10-19; 12:26; 13:20; 18:24; 27:5-6; 1 Corinthians 15:33).
  4. Searching for counsel that flatters your flesh (Proverbs 13:20; 27:6; 1 Kings 12:1-15).
  5. Making excuses for disobedience (1 Samuel 15).
  6. Allowing sin to grow by not keeping short accounts (Psalm 32; 38).
  7. Polishing up a habit of dishonesty (Proverbs 12:17-22; Ephesians 4:25; Colossians 3:9-11).
  8. Staying on the fringe of the church (Hebrews 10:24-25).
  9. Neglecting the flow of discipleship (Hebrews 3:12-13; 10:24-25).
  10. Craving a more palatable pulpit (2 Timothy 4:1-5).
  11. Entertaining (with no filter) negative speech about faithful pastors (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13; 1 Timothy 5:17-21).
  12. Pursuing a relieved rather than a clean conscience (Psalm 32; 51; Colossians 2:20-23; Hebrews 9:11-14; 10:19-22; Matthew 27:1-10; 1 Timothy 1:3-7; 18-20).
  13. Feeding a fear of man, and having a love for man’s approval. (John 5:39-47; 12:42-43; Proverbs 29:25; Galatians 1:10; 2:11-14).
  14. Neglecting the reading of the Word (1 Peter 2:1-3; Colossians 3:16; Psalm 19; 119).
  15. Appreciating truth you don’t apply (consuming sermons without obeying) (James 1:21-27).
  16. Preferring anything in this world over Christ (Colossians 3:1-4).
  17. Living by emotion rather than by faith (Romans 4:18; 2 Corinthians 5:7; Hebrews 11:1).

Grace to you,

Margo

  1. A short-cut for all this is Col.3:16: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…” Or in other words, “be filled with the Spirit.” Eph.5:18.

    • Hi Patrick – Yes, Jesus said “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. apart from me you can do nothing.”
